CGI Impact Garage Doors: The Miami Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CGI-compatible impact garage door parts for Miami homes every week, with most common replacements running $185 to $650 installed depending on the part and your door’s series. In most cases we can match your CGI part from our truck inventory the same day, and we carry OEM and tested aftermarket equivalents so you’re not stuck waiting on a factory shipment. How most Miami owners discover a failing part: the door starts grinding during the 7 a.m. opener cycle, a roller splits after months of salt air and summer humidity, or the bottom seal tears after one too many standing-water events in the driveway. By the time you’re hearing metal-on-metal, that small part has usually been wearing for six months.

One thing worth knowing right now: CGI builds impact-rated garage doors differently than standard doors, and that’s exactly why the parts are not all interchangeable with whatever’s hanging at the local hardware aisle. More on that below. If your door is out of balance, wobbling, or refusing to stay up, call us at (863) 946-5039 and Ed will talk you through what you’re seeing before we ever schedule a truck.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI’s impact garage door lineup in South Florida covers several series you’ll recognize by the label riveted to the inside face of the door panel, usually near the bottom corner. The most common we see in Miami: the CGI Classic Impact (aluminum frame, insulated core), CGI Estate Series (wood-grain finish, heavier gauge), and CGI Architectural Impact (often paired with high-end homes in Coral Gables, Pinecrest, and Coconut Grove). Each series uses different roller diameters, hinge spacings, and cable lengths, so the first thing we ask you to read off is that label, not the model name on your opener.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most DIY attempts run into: CGI uses a wider-than-standard bottom bracket on their impact-rated sections, frequently 14-gauge galvanized steel, versus the 16-gauge standard brackets on non-impact doors. If you buy a universal bottom bracket and force it in place, the cable angle changes and the door can hang uneven, which puts stress on the spring system and shortens the life of a door that should outlast most of the hardware on it. We stock OEM CGI brackets for the Classic and Estate lines on our trucks, and we’ll tell you honestly when a quality aftermarket equivalent will perform identically for less money. Winslow Windows & Doors is an independent service provider; we’re not owned by CGI, which means we recommend the part that makes sense for your door, not the one the factory wants to sell you.

Signs Your CGI Impact Garage Doors Is Failing

  • The door shudders or wags side to side on the way up. This almost always traces to a split or flat-spotted roller, and in CGI doors it’s usually the bottom rollers that fail first because they carry the most weight and sit closest to salt-damp concrete. A broken roller left alone will carve a groove in the aluminum track and turn a $20 part into a $400 track replacement.
  • You hear a snapping or popping sound that echoes through the garage. That’s a cable strand letting go, not the door settling. On CGI impact doors the cables are thicker than standard to handle the added weight of the reinforced sections, and when they start to fray they give a very specific metallic pop, usually first thing in the morning when the door is coldest.
  • The bottom seal is leaving daylight, water, or lizard trails under the door. Miami’s rainy season and occasional King Tide street flooding destroy bottom seals faster than anything else on the door. A torn seal on an impact-rated door matters more than on a standard door because the same gap that lets water in also disrupts the pressure rating you paid for.
  • The door jerks hard at the end of travel, then slams into the floor. This is a failing spring losing its tension gradually. Impact doors are heavier, so the spring on a CGI door works harder every single cycle, and Florida’s humidity accelerates metal fatigue in the coil. A spring that’s lost tension will also make the opener motor run hotter, which is how you end up replacing a $180 spring and a $300 opener board in the same month.
  • The panels are showing small cracks radiating from the hinge bolts. On CGI doors with wood-grain aluminum skins, impact-rated cores can absorb a storm hit and keep functioning while the outer skin shows hairline stress at the hardware points. If you see cracks spreading from a hinge, the door’s structural integrity is compromised and the hinge is failing, not just the panel.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed CGI impact garage door part replacement in Miami runs from $85 for a bottom seal and retainer swap to $185 to $350 for a set of rollers and brackets, $190 to $280 for hinge replacement across a full door, and $220 to $450 for spring replacement on a double-wide impact door. Full cable and drum replacement typically lands between $210 and $390 depending on whether your door is standard height or a raised-panel with a high-lift track. These prices include the part, labor, a cycle test of the opener, and our written workmanship warranty.

What drives the range: the series of your door, the width and height (most Miami CGI doors are 16×7 or 18×7, but some of the newer Coral Gables and Key Biscayne homes have 18×8 and they cost more to service), and whether we’re replacing one component or re-balancing the entire door system. If one spring has failed, we always recommend replacing both, because on an older CGI door the second spring has already lived the same number of cycles and will fail within months, and you’ll pay a second trip charge. Ed is blunt about this: he’d rather tell you now than have you call back in October wondering why the second spring snapped. Call (863) 946-5039 and we’ll walk through the exact part, price, and the standing offers that apply: $40 off any repair over $200, a free second opinion on any written estimate, and no trip charge inside our home county.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things you can do yourself without risk: checking the label on your door to get the series number, listening to the door cycle, inspecting the bottom seal visually, and tightening loose hinge bolts with the door fully closed and the opener unplugged. Those are safe and they help us quote you more accurately over the phone.

But here’s the line we won’t let you cross: garage door springs and cables on a CGI impact door are under tension that can kill. This is not a warning we post for legal cover. A 200-pound impact-rated door has a spring system holding hundreds of pounds of loaded force, and when a spring or cable lets go during a DIY attempt, it can sever fingers, break bones, or throw a winding bar through a wall. We’ve seen the aftermath twice in Miami-Dade, and both times the homeowner was a capable person who simply didn’t know what they didn’t know. If the job involves springs, cables, drums, or the bottom bracket on a tensioned cable, don’t order parts and try it. Call (863) 946-5039 and let our guys handle it with the right tools and the right respect for what’s under tension. The free estimate is just a phone call away.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"Ed measured every opening himself and walked me through the product approval paperwork before I signed anything. When the inspector came he found the notice of acceptance taped inside a window like it should be and passed us first visit."

RRosalind Beaumont
★★★★★

"Our insurance agent asked for the wind mitigation paperwork and Ed had the whole file ready the day the job closed, every opening photographed. The premium conversation went very differently this year."

OOdessa Fairbanks
★★★★★

"We sat out a hurricane behind the windows Ed put in. The gusts threw a neighbour's trampoline down the street and the loudest thing in our house was the kettle. I rang him after to say thank you and he answered his own phone, same as always."
